ROUNDUP : Master’s Upends Tournament’s No. 1 Team on Last-Minute Goal

Call them procrastinators.

The members of the Master’s College soccer team waited until the last minute but upset top-seeded Hawaii Pacific, 2-1, in the NAIA Far West Independents championship at Newhall.

Mustang forward Timo Scheunemann blasted a shot into an empty net when Sea Warrior goal keeper Casey Gewertz came out and misplayed the ball with one minute remaining.

Stephen Janho scored in the first half for the Mustangs on a penalty kick after a Sea Warrior hand ball in the ninth minute to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

Sea Warrior forward Cesar Jube knotted the score at 1-1 by halftime with a five-yard shot into the middle of the net.

The victory gives the Mustangs the right to face Westmont College in the Far West Region final on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Westmont. The winner of that game advances to the NAIA national tournament in Mobile, Ala.

Mission 4, Glendale 0--Omar Pasqualato had two goals and one assist for the visiting Free Spirit (8-2-5, 3-2-3) in a Western State Conference victory.

Israel Cabrera added one goal and one assist for Mission, currently ranked eighth in the state and fifth in Southern California by the California Community Colleges Men’s Soccer Association coaches poll.

Jose Castaneda had eight saves for Glendale (8-5-2, 1-4-2), which came into the match ranked 14th in the state and seventh in Southern California.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Marmonte League Tournament--Top-seeded Helena Horak of Westlake defeated third-seeded Jennifer Donahue of Agoura, 6-0, 6-3, in the singles final at Westlake Racquet Club.

Westlake’s top-seeded doubles team of Erin and Katy Smith also placed first by defeating Jelyn Lu and Leila Jirari of Thousand Oaks, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In the semifinals, Horak defeated Lindsay Tadlock of Thousand Oaks, 6-0, 6-0, and Donahue defeated Angela Chen of Thousand Oaks, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Rio Hondo League Tournament--Alexandra Burrall and Deanna Jin of La Canada took the doubles title with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory at Live Oak Park.

Mayfield 12, Hart 6--Mayfield swept all singles matches in a Division III wild-card match at Mayfield. Maureen Diaz recorded 6-0 victories over Hart’s Lauren Kovner, Gina Nardiello and Beth Campbell. Collette Cushing and Aileen Alonzo also were undefeated.

St. Joseph 9, Buckley 9 (St. Joseph wins on games, 71-69)--Khushchehr Italia, Buckley’s No. 1 singles’ player, recorded three victories in a Division IV wild-card game at Buckley. Buckley’s No. 1 doubles team of Alex Mehlman and Tammy Rosenthal also recorded three victories. Buckley finished 8-9.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine d. Cal State Northridge, 16-14, 14-16, 15-3, 15-12--Nicole Sanderson had 31 kills, and Becci Roehl had 64 assists and 18 digs for the Waves (18-9) in a nonconference match at Matador Gymnasium.

Sanderson also had 13 digs and five blocks. Carrie Romer added 13 kills and Ana Witkowski had 11 kills.

Carrie Kapfenberg led Northridge (2-25) with 24 kills. Crystal Newquist had 12 kills and Holli Hansen added 11 kills and had 10 assists. Heather Hofmans led Northridge with 46 assists.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Cornerstone Christian d. Cuyama Valley, 15-13, 15-11, 17-15--Karen Breshears had 25 kills to lead host Cornerstone Christian (16-3) in a Division VI wild-card match.

Julie Siefert had 19 assists and seven kills, and Julia Tamai added 16 assists and six aces.

Holy Martyrs d. Glendale Adventist, 15-10, 10-15, 15-8, 15-7--Aline Boyadjian had nine assists and 13 blocks for the host Armens (7-11) in the Division VI wild card victory.

Susie Jarakian added 15 blocks and Lyla Ghazarian contributed five aces for Holy Martyrs, the third-place representative from the Liberty League.
