ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: PREP EXTRA : Capistrano Valley’s MacKenzie Caps 1,000-Yard Season

Share

Maleafou MacKenzie might have run Capistrano Valley into a South Coast League championship Thursday night, rushing for 189 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cougars past Dana Hills, 30-0.

Capistrano Valley (8-2, 4-1 in league) remained tied with San Clemente, and a half game ahead of Mater Dei, which plays at Mission Viejo tonight. If Mater Dei wins, a coin flip among the three determines the league champion.

Dana Hills held MacKenzie in check for his first two carries for minus-one yard, then he was off. He has 1,041 yards rushing in 10 games.

On first and 10 at Capistrano Valley’s 24, MacKenzie dived off left guard, swerved right then broke three tackles, the last busting him loose for a 76-yard touchdown run and a 7-0 Cougar lead.

MacKenzie’s strong running set up the Cougars’ second score, a one-yard run by Charley Landrigan for a 13-0 halftime lead.

MacKenzie took the second-half kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. A 26-yard field goal by Brett Thompson pushed the score to 23-0 before Mackenzie scored his third touchdown on a 24-yard run around left end to make it 30-0.

The run also put MacKenzie over the 1,000-yard mark for the season.

Capistrano Valley’s defense played equally well, sacking quarterback John Morgan 10 times for minus-48 yards.
