PREP GIRLS’ TENNIS / SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFFS : Garden Grove Beats Brea Olinda Handily
Garden Grove continued its undefeated season and advanced to the second round of the Division IV Southern Section girls’ tennis playoffs, easily defeating Brea Olinda, 14-4, Thursday at Garden Grove High.
Garden Grove will face Cerritos, the Mission Valley League champion, on Saturday, with the site to be determined by a coin toss.
Garden Grove (18-0) won its first Garden Grove League title since 1986.
Garden Grove took a 5-1 lead after the first round, with its only loss coming when Brea Olinda’s Amanda Manton beat Theresa Do, 6-2. Manton picked up three of the four points for Brea Olinda (11-9), easily sweeping her opponents, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Garden Grove lost only one set, a final-round defeat of Loan Tron and Anne Abinales by Kristin Schmachtenberg and Megan Walsh, 6-3.
Quynh Nguyen and Tam Dang battled through an hourlong set to begin the day, finally beating Schmachtenberg and Walsh, 6-4. Nguyen and Dang, 54-0 this season, won, 6-4, 6-2, 6-0.
