The NFL’s most ballyhooed game of the season became a no-showdown Friday when Michael Dillingham, San Francisco 49er team physician, told associates that quarterback Steve Young would not start Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Young, who has sat out three games because of severe bruises and strains in his left shoulder, did not throw for a second consecutive day Friday.

Young is reportedly worried not only about the pain, but about potential other injuries if he compensates for the problem.

He will be the third quarterback Sunday, behind Elvis Grbac and Cary Conklin.

Without Young, the 49ers are 1-2, having lost to the expansion Carolina Panthers and the lowly New Orleans Saints. The Cowboys, beaten twice by the 49ers last season, by 10 points in the NFC championship game, are 8-1.
