PREP FOOTBALL PLAYOFF CAPSULES : DIVISION VIII
- Share via
Defending champion: Bloomington, a 48-32 winner over La Mirada.
Seeded teams: 1. Baldwin Park Sierra Vista (9-0-1); 2. La Mirada (8-1-1); 3. Riverside Norte Vista (8-2); 4. Laguna Hills (9-1).
Dark horse: University (8-1-1), whose strong defense (57 points given up) has made every game they’ve played a close one.
Notes: There are four county teams in the playoffs--Aliso Niguel, Laguna Hills, Estancia (the wild card) and University . . . Aliso Niguel makes the playoffs in its third year of varsity football. “This is brand new to us, so it’s hard to tell [the draft position],” said Coach Joe Wood, whose team faces Monrovia in the first round . . . Laguna Hills sophomore Mike Jones ended the regular-season second in the country in rushing with 1,918 yards . . . If Bloomington, which finished 5-5, can win its first-round game against San Marino, it could meet last year’s championship opponent La Mirada in the next round. La Mirada would have to beat Estancia . . . Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon is the only nine-game winner not seeded; the Titans finished second in the Sunkist League to third-seed Norte Vista. They lost to Norte Vista in two overtimes, 33-27.
