SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

There wasn’t much revenge in the rematch.

In fact, there was none at all as the Chatsworth High girls’ volleyball team swept Palisades, 15-10, 15-6, 15-8, in the City Section 4-A Division semifinals Wednesday night.

The Chancellors, who beat Palisades in last season’s 4-A championship, rebuffed any revenge factor by playing outstanding defense.

The top-seeded Chancellors (25-1) advance to the City final and will play second-seeded Roosevelt on Saturday at Occidental College.

“We just wanted to prove that winning last year’s finals wasn’t a fluke,” said Jennifer Joseph, who had 15 kills and 16 digs. “We wanted to beat them in three games.”

They did, mainly because the fifth-seeded Dolphins (6-6) could not get through Chatsworth’s defense.

Not even a blackout midway through the second game, which caused a five-minute delay, could stop the Chancellors, who raced to leads of 11-3, 10-4 and 11-0 in the first three games.

Middle blocker Nancy Vincent, who played with partially torn ligaments in her left knee, a sprained right ankle and a sprained right finger, had 13 blocks and eight kills.

“We knew they were out to get us from last year,” said Vincent, who, along with Michelle George (seven blocks) and Tynitra Wilson (four blocks), shut down the Palisades offense at the net. “We didn’t let it get to us and just took it to them.”

When incoming traffic wasn’t stopped, Chatsworth’s back row was there for the dig.

“I’d say they’re the best team we’ve faced,” said Palisades Coach Dave Suarez, who received 17 kills from Courtney Kohl.

The Chancellors might not want to visit the Palisades area for a while: The Dolphins had won 20 of 23 City championships until the Chancellors stopped them last year.

There aren’t, however, any guilty feelings.

“We didn’t want them to think we were just some batch of Valley kids that got lucky one night,” Chatsworth Coach Bud Dow said. “This is the kind of play we’ve been shooting for all year.”

Chatsworth has to shoot straight for one more match to become the only team--besides Palisades--to repeat as 4-A champs.

“If we play our game, keep our heads together and peak the way we’ve been peaking, it’s going to take an awfully good effort by somebody to beat us,” Dow said.
