Aside from two first-half pass plays, Capistrano Valley Christian stayed close to Anza Hamilton in the first round of the Division XI football playoffs.

However, those passes went for touchdowns, then Hamilton used a big third quarter to bury the Eagles, 40-6, Friday night at Hemet Stadium.

Hamilton plays the winner of today’s game between Mammoth and Downey Calvary Chapel in the second round.

The Eagles (4-4) were unable to contain Hamilton running back Nick Rueda, who ran for 154 yards. Jesse Cable added 116 yards and two touchdown runs. Rueda scored three touchdowns and threw for another.

Hamilton (10-1) did not start well, fumbling on its first play, but things got better. Facing third and 15 from the 30-yard line, quarterback Nathan Mulligan lofted a pass to Rueda, who ran behind the coverage and pulled it in for a 6-0 lead.

The Eagles got a tying score with 7 minutes 20 seconds left in the half as Wayland Williams wound his way around the defense and went in from 22 yards.

Hamilton came right back, sparked by a 40-yard kickoff return by Rueda. Five plays later, Cable ran it in from the 21 and the kick gave Hamilton a 13-6 lead.
