It took Laguna Hills all of one quarter to get its offense going. When it did, the Hawks gave La Puente an early exit from the Southern Section Division VIII playoffs.

Quarterback Cory Pardoe passed for 110 yards and three touchdowns and running back Mike Jones gained 194 yards in a 28-0 first-round victory Friday at Mission Viejo High.

The Hawks (10-1) won their 10th consecutive game with their second shutout in a row. They are at Temescal Canyon next week. The Warriors (6-5), making their first playoff visit in 17 years, were held to 55 yards and three first downs on offense.

It took Laguna Hills three series to solve La Puente’s seven-man front. After accounting for just 20 yards in the first quarter, Laguna Hills went 80 yards in nine plays. Saia Makakaufaki scored on a 23-yard pass from Pardoe.

Then, after holding La Puente on downs, Laguna Hills quickly marched 61 yards in eight plays. This time Jay Johnson caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Pardoe and Kevin McCaffrey’s point-after made it 14-0 at halftime.

“At first we weren’t getting off the ball and some of the kids got discouraged,” Pardoe said. “Once they brought up their safety, I looked to the tight end for the completion. It was easy.”
