COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Santa Clara Tries, but Can’t Get Past Villanova

Kerry Kittles scored 23 points to lead a balanced attack and No. 3 Villanova held off several second-half rallies Tuesday night in beating Santa Clara, 77-65, and advancing to the championship game of the Maui Invitational at Lahaina, Hawaii.

The Wildcats (2-0) will face No. 20 North Carolina in the final.

Villanova took control early, building a 39-25 advantage by halftime. The Broncos, looking for their second upset after beating UCLA on Monday, staged two rallies and cut the deficit to five points with 3:43 left, but could get no closer as the Wildcats converted 10 of 16 free throws down the stretch.

No. 20 North Carolina 92, Michigan State 70--Dante Calabria scored 22 points and Jeff McInnis 21 to lead the Tar Heels (2-0) past the the Spartans (1-1) in a semifinal of the Maui Invitational.

The Tar Heels led, 46-31, at halftime and increased it to 26 points less than five minutes into the second half. They made 35 of 61 shots in the game.

The Spartans were led by Jamie Feick, who had 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Vanderbilt 96, Chaminade 71--Frank Seckar got 18 of his game-high 30 points on three-pointers as the Commodores (1-1) routed the Division II Silverswords (0-2) in the consolation round of the Maui Invitational.
