SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

With tap-dancing turkeys, whip-cracking dominatrixes and straight-laced marching bands, radio talk show hosts Mark and Brian brought their irreverent Day Before Thanksgiving Day Parade to Orange County for the first time Wednesday.

The Macy’s parade it wasn’t.

But most of the 10,000 fans and spectators who filled the Old Towne traffic circle and surrounding streets in the wee hours couldn’t have cared less.

They applauded the Road Kill Grill float, complete with faux mashed critters being shoveled off the parade route. They cheered for an actual Volkswagen covered with papier-mache into the shape of a turkey; they laughed at Dancing Chimney Sweeps on a flatbed truck.

In all, there were 75 floats and groups in the procession, including the elephant star from the movie “Dumbo Drop,” a couple dressed as Bonnie and Clyde who stopped their 1928 Model A Ford long enough to eat raw chicken livers, a margarita-making cart propelled by a weed-whacker, and a variety of scatological displays.

The L.A.-based radio personalities kicked off what they termed the “bitchin” parade by driving up in an old red Cadillac convertible with painted orange and yellow flames licking the back fenders. They later said they were themselves surprised by the showing.

“This year was without a doubt the biggest crowd and the best floats,” said Mark Thompson, 39, who sported a Patriots sweat shirt for the big day.

Co-host Brian Phelps, looking radio-star chic in an all-black suit, said he couldn’t get over the “Mayberry-esqueness” of Orange’s historic plaza area.

“This is the first time the parade was in a real town square,” he said. “We didn’t know if this was going to work out, but it actually felt like a real parade. . . . This was the craziest one yet.”

The duo chose Orange for their sashay this year to broaden their base now that they are syndicating to some 15 cities from Honolulu to Albuquerque. Many of their fans are in Orange County, they said.

They already have made their mark on San Francisco, one of the latest cities to pick up their syndicated show.

The team recently made statewide news when a photographer shot them with San Francisco Mayor Frank Jordan, all taking a shower together for a publicity stunt. The picture may cost Jordan, who is in the middle of a reelection campaign, his job, political analysts said, but it gave the hosts an avalanche of publicity. “We’re No. 1 in the city now,” said Mark and Brian, who declined to disassociate their personalities for a telephone interview Tuesday.

Orange Mayor Joanne Coontz declined their request to join them in a shower. Three seemingly naked men re-enacted the San Francisco stunt in Wednesday’s parade, although the steam pouring out the side of the shower was dissolving the paint on the “Re-Elect Mayor Jordan” sign.

Participants and spectators showed up before dawn, but the early hour did not deter Mark and Brian fans from supporting their heroes for their 6 to 10 a.m. daily show.

“I go to all their stuff, no matter where it is,” said Buddy Knisley, a vacuum salesman from Riverside. “It’s their sense of humor, it’s everything about them.” Knisley is even ready to haul up to Utah at a moment’s notice to see the pair catapult a stolen Bob’s Big Boy statue over Snake River.

“They don’t raise themselves above the audience,” said longtime listener Kurt Wagner, a 33-year-old mechanic who also drove from Riverside for the event. “These guys know so many people, so many stars, they’re stars themselves. But when you go up for an autograph, they are just regular guys.”
