Jonathan Prasuhn kicked a 36-yard field goal with 22 seconds left to cap a 17-point comeback and lift Arizona past Arizona State, 31-28, at Tempe, preventing the Sun Devils from going to the Independence Bowl.

Dan White passed for three touchdowns, including two in the second quarter, for the Wildcats, 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the Pacific 10 Conference. Arizona State fell to 6-5, 4-4 and had its four-game winning streak ended.

Trailing, 28-14, with seven minutes remaining, Arizona began its rally by scoring twice in 61 seconds.

White completed 25 of 38 passes for 289 yards, including a six-yard scoring pass to Cary Taylor with 6:30 left to bring the Wildcats within 28-21.

On Arizona State’s next possession, Jake Plummer was sacked by defensive tackle Chuck Osborne. Joe Salave’a picked up the loose ball and returned it six yards for a 28-28 tie.

After Arizona State was stopped on downs, the Wildcats took over with 3:09 and drove to the game-winning field goal.

Senior defensive end Tedy Bruschi had 2 1/2 sacks in the game to finish his career with 52 to tie Derrick Thomas’ mark of 52 set at Alabama from 1985-88.

Boston College 41, Rutgers 38--Mark Hartsell threw two of his four touchdown passes in the final 3:49, and the Eagles (4-8, 3-3) rallied to defeat the Scarlet Knights (4-7, 2-5) in a Big East Conference game at Piscataway, N.J., in what might have been the final games for coaches Dan Henning and Doug Graber.

Henning, who took Boston College to a bowl last year and suffered an injury-plagued season this year, reportedly is a candidate to become the offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots. Graber’s job is in jeopardy due to Rutgers’ poor season, which gives him a 29-36-1 mark in six seasons and no bowl appearances.

If this was their last game, it was a memorable one, with safety Rob Clifford dashing Rutgers’ hopes by intercepting a pass by Ray Lucas in the end zone with five seconds to play after the Scarlet Knights drove to the Eagles’ 13.

Purdue 51, Indiana 14--Mike Alstott, already the school’s career rushing and scoring leader, broke the Purdue single-season rushing record and scored three touchdowns in a Big Ten Conference game at Bloomington, Ind.

Purdue (4-6-1, 2-5-1) took a 24-0 lead in the second quarter and put the Hoosiers (2-9, 0-8) away with three touchdowns in the third quarter. Alstott, who finished with a career-high 264 yards, set up one score with a 59-yard run, then scored on a 62-yard run the next series.

Alstott raised his season total to 1,436 yards, breaking the Purdue record of 1,361 set in 1972 by Otis Armstrong.

North Carolina 30, North Carolina State 28--Leon Johnson ran for 139 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Tar Heels (6-5, 4-4) held off the Wolfpack (3-8, 2-6) in a rainy and windy Atlantic Coast Conference game at Raleigh, N.C.

The victory kept alive the Tar Heels’ possibilities for the Carquest or Independence bowls. But N.C. State didn’t go without a fight, scoring twice in the final 2:36 to set up a possible tie with seven seconds left.

But Terry Harvey’s conversion pass sailed wide of Mark Thomas, who appeared to be pushed by a Tar Heel defender in the end zone. Wolfpack coaches and players argued, but to no avail.

West Virginia 21, Pittsburgh 0--Chad Johnston threw for two touchdowns at Morgantown, W.Va., in leading the Mountaineers (5-6, 4-3) to a Big East victory over the Panthers (2-9, 0-7) for their fourth consecutive victory in the series.
