From Associated Press

Philadelphia goalie Garth Snow knew the streaking Detroit Red Wings, winners of seven in a row, were quick and aggressive, so he responded in kind.

Snow came out to challenge nearly every Detroit advance Friday and turned away all but one of 37 shots as the Flyers extended their winning streak to five games with a 4-1 victory at Philadelphia.

“You really have to work on your skating to get out and challenge,” said Snow. “I’ve been working on that in practice.”

Philadelphia connected on two of five power plays. In the five games since Eric Lindros returned from a knee injury, the Flyers have managed a goal in every period but one.

Edmonton 5, Calgary 2--Zdeno Ciger scored twice in a five-goal second period to lead the Oilers over the Flames at the Saddledome in Calgary.

Ciger’s first goal came early in the second as the Oilers scored four goals in less than five minutes. He added his second before the period was over and Edmonton was well on its way to its first victory in Calgary since Jan. 4, 1992, ending an 11-game winless drought (0-10-1) there.

Edmonton’s Doug Weight got three assists to extend his point-scoring streak to nine games.

Buffalo 1, N.Y. Islanders 1--Jason Dawe’s second-period goal lifted the Sabres to a tie at Buffalo, extending the Sabres’ unbeaten streak to five (4-0-1).

Hartford 4, Toronto 0--Jeff Reese stopped 30 shots at Toronto for his first shutout of the season and the Whalers’ first road shutout since March 13, 1992. Kelly Chase, Nelson Emerson, Geoff Sanderson and Andrew Cassels scored as the Whalers ended Toronto’s three-game win streak.

Tampa Bay 2, Washington 1--Paul Ysebaert scored the go-ahead goal with 15:14 remaining as the Lightning beat the Capitals.
