Obituaries : * Ethel R. Spangler; Ex-Broadway Performer

Ethel R. Spangler of Camarillo, a former Broadway performer and longtime member of the Los Angeles Real Estate Board, died of a stroke Tuesday at St. Johns Pleasant Valley Hospital. She was 94.

Spangler was born Jan. 8, 1901 in Sacramento.

She attended the Julliard School of Music in New York and sang in civic light opera and Broadway productions.

A real estate broker, Spangler worked in the industry for 29 years. She was one of the first women in the real estate business in Santa Monica and served on the Los Angeles realty board from 1954 to 1971.

“She was an unusual woman,” said her cousin, Shirley Perry, with whom Spangler lived the last five years of her life. “She was a women’s libber way before it was fashionable.”

A 20-year county resident, Spangler lived first in Hueneme Bay before moving to Camarillo. When she was 70, she started taking painting lessons.

An avid sewer, gardener and stamp collector, Spangler was a life-time member of the American Philatelic Society.

In addition to Perry, she is survived by numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Casper, whom she will be placed next to in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Santa Monica. All services will be private.
