Share

Scores of irregularities in the Burbank High football program were uncovered during a private investigation, according to a report made public Friday by the Burbank Unified School District.

Sam Nicholson, a former principal at Crescenta Valley High School who was hired by the CIF Southern Section and the district, found five possible violations of the so-called undue influence rule (recruiting), two violations of residency rules and three possible residency-rules violations.

Former Burbank coach John Hazelton may have exerted undue influence on three students to attend Burbank and may have used a tutorial service that was available to Bulldog players as an inducement for two of them to attend Burbank, the report says.

Nicholson’s report came to the same conclusion about Burbank Board of Education president Joe Hooven regarding the transfer of a student from Burroughs to Burbank, and named assistant coaches Ted Anderson and John Greaves as exerting influence on students to transfer to Burbank.
