DING DONG DUCK: Officials at Langdon Avenue Elementary School in North Hills are none too thrilled at national publicity in an educational magazine about their “shooting bell.” According to the article, the bell emits a long sound to warn kids to skedaddle off the playground when gunshots ring out. Assistant Principal Phil Genino says the bell is standard operating procedure for all emergencies. . . . It was, however, used once during a shooting incident.

NO BRAINER: The magazine, the American School Board Journal, picked Langdon’s “shooting bell” as one of its Ballot Box questions of the month. It asks readers: Should schools everywhere adopt this idea to protect students? Or is it “an extreme option” to be rejected in favor of teaching nonviolence? . . . We vote for keeping the kids alive.

STORMY WEATHER: Glendale teacher Fred Koegler, above, is among the small army of Los Angeles County residents who double as “spotters” for the National Weather Service (B1). . . . The spotters, who are volunteers, use a variety of instruments to measure local rainfall and wind speeds. (See Valley Briefing, B2)

SATELLITE CITY: UCLA Extension has its main offices just up the street in Westwood from where Howard Stern signed autographs Friday. But the operation also has a satellite campus at Universal CityWalk. . . . There, a state-of-the-art multimedia lab makes it possible to learn cutting-edge entertainment technology. Even virtual reality. Enrollment is open. Call (310) 825-9971.

FAVORITE SON: Private eye Jan B. Tucker of Toluca Lake is running for President. Yes, U.S. President. . . . He calls himself “California’s Favorite Feminist” and is running as a Peace and Freedom Party candidate in the state presidential primary. The CSUN grad has been a member of the party since he was a student at Pacoima Junior High School.
