Nebraska running back Lawrence Phillips was sentenced to one year of probation Tuesday, 11 weeks after he beat a former girlfriend and was suspended from the team.

He will be available to play against Florida in the Fiesta Bowl.

Phillips also was ordered to attend a domestic violence prevention class and pay $359 in restitution.

Phillips, accompanied by attorney Hal Anderson, declined to comment after the sentencing and later at the school’s athletic offices.

Phillips’ probation will expire Nov. 29, 1996. He could face 30 days in jail, but the judge and Anderson said that would be waived if probation is completed successfully.

Coach Tom Osborne has been criticized for not dismissing Phillips from the Cornhuskers.

Junior tailback Randy Kinder, Notre Dame’s leading rusher, was suspended for the sixth-ranked Irish’s Orange Bowl game against Florida State. No reason was given by school officials.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz said he has reached an agreement that will keep him at the university.

Arkansas running back Madre Hill, who set a school record with 1,387 yards rushing this year, will sit out the Dec. 30 Carquest bowl game against North Carolina after undergoing surgery to repair ligament damage to his knee.

Linebacker Vincent Bradford also underwent knee surgery but might be available for the Carquest Bowl in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Gary Crowton, whose work as offensive coordinator led Louisiana Tech to No. 14 in total offense in the NCAA, was given a five-year contract to be the new head coach.

Innocent pleas were entered on behalf of Ohio State quarterback Tom Hoying, 20, and defensive end Mike Vrabel, 20, on assault charges stemming from a bar fight.

Hoying is the brother of starting quarterback Bobby Hoying.
