LAKE FOREST : Split Council Reelects Dixon to 2nd Mayoral Term

Share

A familiar team will be leading city government next year. A divided City Council this week reelected Mayor Richard T. Dixon and Mayor Pro Tem Helen Wilson for second terms.

Councilman Peter Herzog nominated Dixon at Tuesday’s meeting, saying that with the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station reuse plan coming up for a vote next year, the city needs someone at the helm who is familiar with the issue.

Herzog supported Dixon “in light of the fact that the mayor has been in Washington and Sacramento, meeting people and making decisions” about the base conversion.

The nomination was opposed by Councilwoman Ann Van Haun, who said Dixon didn’t have to be mayor to lend his expertise. Van Haun nominated Herzog for the job, but he declined.

Councilwoman Kathyrn McCullough also voted against Dixon. She said Dixon might not be able to give his full attention to the job because of his plans to run for the 71st Assembly District seat being vacated by Mickey Conroy (R-Orange).

“We don’t need the mayor doing double duty, running for Assembly and being the mayor,” said McCullough, who nominated Van Haun for the job.
