Wildlife Dilemma

* Maureen Halpert’s recent experience with the death of a family of deer on the San Joaquin Hills Road is tragically unfortunate yet illustrates all too clearly the pressures facing the indigenous wildlife in the Newport Coast area (Letters, Dec. 3).

The road was built to provide access to the profitable land along the coastal hills, and no amount of public awareness will help the local deer as development increases.

The irony of the situation is that in choosing to reside in Newport Coast, Halpert is indirectly endorsing a land use policy that leaves room only for the wildlife too small to be noticed. Sadly, I would encourage her to enjoy the beauty of the local deer while she can.
