Valleywide : Storm System Could Bring Rain This Week

The San Fernando Valley could get rain this week, the first precipitation in more than a month, forecasters said.

A storm system that will hit Northern and Central California on Tuesday could spill over into the Los Angeles area.

“Southern California will be on the southernmost fringe of the storm,” said Michael Most, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard. “If it does rain, it could be off and on for the rest of the week.”

At the very least, the storm will mean cloudy skies. Before it hits land, the storm system will deepen the marine layer, which brings cool coastal air and fog into the Valley. That means morning fog will be at higher elevations.

Today the fog is more likely to be in Woodland Hills and the foothills, rather than lower areas of the Valley such as Burbank and Van Nuys, Most said.

The last rain to hit Los Angeles was Nov. 1. With little more than one-tenth of an inch of rain since July 1, Southern California has been drier than usual, Most said. The normal amount of rainfall is about 3 1/2 inches by this time of year.

High temperatures across the Valley today will be in the upper 60s and low 70s. Low temperatures will range from the upper 40s to low 50s.
