COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Massachusetts Defeats Calipari’s Old School

Edgar Padilla scored 17 points and Marcus Camby got a rest Tuesday as No. 3 Massachusetts used an early 17-0 run to beat North Carolina Wilmington, Minutemen Coach John Calipari’s former school, 77-51, at Amherst, Mass.

The Minutemen (6-0) missed their first six shots but rebounded from an 8-2 deficit to take a 19-8 lead. It was 43-23 at halftime and North Carolina Wilmington (2-5) never got closer than 18.

College basketball--Because of an editing error, The Times incorrectly reported Wednesday that Florida State backup point guard Scott Shepherd had been arrested for allegedly stalking a former girlfriend. James Collins was the player arrested.

Donta Bright scored 16 points as Camby had only six points and three blocks in 18 minutes.

Preston McGriff and Stan Simmons each scored 10 points for the Seahawks, who have never beaten a ranked team and lost to the third Top 25 opponent this season.

No. 8 Connecticut 79, Florida State 61--Ray Allen scored 22 points to lead the Huskies (7-1) to a victory over the Seminoles (4-2) at Tallahassee, Fla.

The Huskies were never threatened, scoring the first 11 points en route to a 40-25 halftime lead. The Seminoles went scoreless for the first five minutes while making only six of 33 field goals before intermission.

Florida State backup point guard Scott Shepherd, arrested by police Monday for allegedly stalking a former girlfriend, played all 40 minutes and scored 11 points.

No. 22 Santa Clara 66, Fresno State 58--Marlon Garnett scored 17 points and Brendan Graves had 14 as the Broncos (6-1) weathered an off-shooting night by guard Steve Nash to beat the Bulldogs (3-4) at Santa Clara.

Nash, averaging 18 points as Santa Clara’s leading scorer, was held to six points on two-for-13 shooting. Kendric Brooks’ 20 points led Fresno State, which has lost three of the past four under first-year Coach Jerry Tarkanian.
