Rookie Steve McNair will make his first start for the Houston Oilers against the New York Jets on Sunday.

Coach Jeff Fisher was impressed enough with McNair’s performance in relief of Chris Chandler, who has mononucleosis, in Sunday’s 24-17 loss to Detroit to give him the starting nod against the league’s top-ranked pass defense.

McNair completed 16 of 27 passes for 203 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

A pickup truck driven by Miami Dolphin tackle Richmond Webb collided with a van, but he escaped with only a bruised knee and cut lip. Webb sat out practice to have treatment and is listed as probable for Sunday’s game at Buffalo.
