BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Long Shot a Shortfall for Valley

Valley College battled back from a 10-point halftime deficit, forced overtime but lost a men’s basketball game to Rancho Santiago, 72-71, on Ross Tremain’s three-point shot with three seconds left Thursday night in the first round of the Pasadena tournament.

After Tremain’s basket gave Rancho Santiago (8-3) the lead, the Monarchs (8-4) tried an alley-oop pass to Will O’Neal, whose shot bounced off the rim.

Vernon Simmons had 27 points and 14 rebounds for Valley.

Antelope Valley 112, Contra Costa 50--Brandon McIntire scored 24 points on eight three-point baskets and the Marauders (9-4) recorded the second-largest margin of victory in their history in a first-round game at the College of the Sequoias tournament.

BOYS

University 62, Van Nuys 52--The Wolves were outscored, 16-2, in the first quarter and fell to University in the semifinals of the Hamilton tournament.

Onaje Longmire had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Jon Okui added 13 points for the Wolves (1-3).

Crescenta Valley 64, Reseda 39--Michael Greco scored 20 points and Nathan Sinning added 19 for the Falcons (7-1) in pool play of the Crescenta Valley tournament.

Mandeep Hayre had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Regents (2-4).

Poly 68, Franklin 60--Eric Owens had 21 points and 10 rebounds for Poly (2-4) in pool play of the Crescenta Valley tournament.

Bellflower 55, Quartz Hill 38--Brian Woodworth scored 13 points and Brad Hazard added 12 for the Rebels (4-5) in pool play of the Crescenta Valley tournament.

Kevin Gibbs scored 15 points for the Buccaneers (8-1).

Hoover 57, San Fernando 36--Arbi Baghdasarian had 14 points for Hoover (4-2) in pool play of the La Canada Tournament.

Notre Dame 82, El Rancho 59--Ryan Bowne had 23 points for the Knights (3-3) in pool play of the La Canada tournament.

GIRLS

Thousand Oaks 62, Simi Valley 56--Tawnee Cooper’s 35 points were not enough for the Pioneers in a Marmonte League game.

Jenn Detmer had 20 points for the Lancers (4-2, 2-0).

Notre Dame 47, Hoover 30--Lourdes Slinsky had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Knights (5-2) in the first round of the Burroughs tournament.

Harvard-Westlake 60, Marlborough 31--The Wolverines (8-1) had 17 steals to win their eighth in a row in the championship game of the Marlborough tournament.
