Chris Martin, Northwestern’s All-Big Ten cornerback, and D’Wayne Bates, the Wildcats’ top receiver, were held out of Friday’s practice because of injuries.

Coach Gary Barnett said Bates, who has a hyperextended right knee, and Martin, who has a strained tendon in his right foot, would probably be rested again today, when the team shifts its base to Pasadena and begins practicing at Citrus College in Glendora.

Neither player is expected to miss the Rose Bowl.

The Wildcats got their first look at themselves on a Wheaties box. The box, issued to commemorate their Big Ten championship, is available only in the Midwest.

“That’s pretty neat,” senior tri-captain Rob Johnson said. “You don’t get respect until you’ve earned it, and when you get on a Wheaties box, you’ve earned it.”

Instead of getting their team rings for Christmas, the Wildcats will have to wait until April.

“You may want to put the score of the Rose Bowl on it if you win,” Barnett said. “If you don’t win, you probably don’t want to mess with it.”
