Georgia Reacts Quickly to Mason Snub, Names Donnan as Its Coach

ATHENS, Ga. —
Spurned by Kansas Coach Glen Mason, Georgia on Monday hired Jim Donnan of Marshall to become its new football coach.
Donnan had been a top contender to replace the fired Ray Goff before Georgia Athletic Director Vince Dooley hired Mason last week.
Georgia spokesman Claude Felton said a news conference would be held today to announce Donnan’s appointment.
Mason said Monday he had changed his mind and will stay with the Jayhawks, whom he led to a 51-30 victory over UCLA in the Aloha Bowl. The eight-year Kansas coach cited “personal reasons” for his decision and apologized to the University of Georgia for placing the school in an “embarrassing situation.”
