2nd Suspect Named in Fatal Chase

Police on Monday identified the second of two theft suspects who led officers on a two-city chase before crashing into a vehicle and killing veteran boxer Ernie Magdaleno.

The driver of the fleeing car died at the scene, but his passenger, identified as Dawn Marie Kazamecki, 20, of Huntington Beach, survived the collision and was airlifted to UCI Medical Center in Orange with severe head injuries.

Kazamecki remained in critical condition Monday.

Fountain Valley police, who have jurisdiction over the attempted theft, said that Kazamecki could face grand theft charges.

Huntington Beach police, who have jurisdiction over the collision, said that they are still investigating and do not know what charges might result from the fatal crash.

The chase began Sunday afternoon after Kazamecki and a man identified by police as John Kenneth Bandola Jr., 19, of Cypress allegedly tried to steal some camera equipment from a car at a Fountain Valley service station, police said.

They fled and led pursuing police 2 1/2 miles into Huntington Beach, where Bandola, the driver, ran a red light at high speed and collided with Magdaleno’s vehicle. Magdaleno, of Westminster, was killed, but his wife, Carrie, and young children, Samantha and Joshua, survived.

Clyde Armijo, the boxer’s trainer, said that Carrie Magdaleno had suffered broken ribs. UCI Medical Center reported that she was in stable condition Monday.

“She’s doing OK,” Armijo said after visiting the hospital Monday afternoon. “She’s dealing with it as well as can be expected. She’s very upset. She has a lot of people visiting her.”

He said Samantha, 6, suffered a concussion and has been released from a hospital. Joshua, 2, suffered a broken leg and minor injuries, Armijo said.
