Eight people were injured in a head-on collision in the Santa Clarita Valley late Friday.

The accident occurred when a car driven by a 17-year-old male went out of control as it passed another vehicle while heading south on Shadow Pines Boulevard in the Soledad Canyon area, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The Acura slammed head-on into a van driven by Jay Memmott, 34, said Deputy Jake Kuredjian. The eight victims, including five in the van, were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, Kuredjian said. A 15-year-old passenger in the Acura was airlifted from the accident scene, according to reports.

A hospital spokeswoman said Saturday that two of the injured were admitted. One was in serious condition and the other was reported in fair condition. The Sheriff’s Department said the cause of the crash was under investigation.
