Two teenagers who police said cut off an unmarked police car at a Pacoima intersection and then committed a drive-by shooting in front of two detectives were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, authorities said Tuesday.

The 15-year-old suspects, whose names were not released because they are juveniles, were taken into custody Monday afternoon in the 11800 block of Foothill Boulevard, police said.

A third suspect wanted in connection with the gang-related shooting remains at large.

Los Angeles Police Det. Frank Bishop said the incident began at the intersection of Van Nuys Boulevard and Dronfield Avenue when three youths riding in a Toyota Camry cut off an unmarked police car as they raced to catch up with the occupants of a Monte Carlo.

“The detectives could see that it was not going to be a friendly confrontation when they caught up to the Toyota and someone inside fired a round with a shotgun into the Monte Carlo,” Bishop said.

The Monte Carlo sped away and the three youths in the Toyota bailed out of that car, which had been reported stolen, Bishop said.

A police perimeter was set up, in which two of the youths were discovered as was a shotgun and some shells, police said.

“Statements made by the suspects showed that they knew it was a police car” that they had cut off, Bishop said.
