An 18-year-old man died Wednesday nearly 12 hours after he was shot by a Culver City police officer during a traffic stop, officials said.

Anthony Garrett of Los Angeles sustained a gunshot wound to his neck and died at 9:52 a.m. at Brotman Medical Center, said Lt. Bill Burck of the Culver City Police Department. A second Los Angeles man, 24-year-old Alan Beldon, was in stable condition with a wound to his forearm.

About 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, two officers stopped a vehicle driven by Beldon in the 10800 block of Jefferson Boulevard. As the officers approached the car, one saw the passenger holding a handgun in his lap, Burck said.

The passenger, later identified as Garrett, allegedly pointed the weapon at the officer and the officer fired twice. One bullet passed through Garrett’s neck and struck Beldon, he said.

Burke refused to release the name of the officer who shot the men. He remains on duty while the shooting is investigated.
