Santa Fe Springs is taking city commuters for a ride.
The city recently began running vans between the recently opened Norwalk / Santa Fe Springs Transportation Center and job sites in Santa Fe Springs.
Dubbed the Metro Express, the ride costs $1 each way and runs three trips each morning and evening. Since service began this month, the van has provided about 20 passengers a day with door-to-door service between the Metrolink station and workplaces.
Employers had been asking the city to give workers a lift to work from the depot since it opened last year. A recent survey of employers indicated that more than 100 workers who use the commuter rail could use the service.
The City Council has budgeted $61,000 toward operating the service for a year. However, officials hope that the costs can be shared by the South Coast Air Quality Management District and the Southern California Regional Rail Authority in addition to private employers.
