A marble statue of the late Georgia Sen. Richard B. Russell Jr. was unveiled Wednesday in the rotunda of the Senate office building named after him nearly 25 years ago.

More than 100 members of Russell’s family joined scores of current and former senators, Georgia political figures and Vice President Al Gore for the ceremony.

Russell, who died in 1971, represented Georgia in the Senate for 38 years after serving 10 years in the Georgia Legislature and a term as governor.
