Another Storm May Visit Area

One day after the biggest storm of the season struck Ventura County, weather forecasters said Thursday that another storm system is just over the horizon.

Stuart Seto of the National Weather Service in Oxnard said there is a 20% chance of showers today and a 30% chance on Saturday.

“It’s another Pacific storm, but it won’t be anything like Wednesday’s,” Seto said. “It would be light, intermittent rains.”

Nearly 1 1/2 inches of rain fell across the populated areas of Ventura County on Wednesday, and more than 3 inches fell in some mountainous regions.

An 11-year-old Moorpark boy was swept to his death Wednesday after apparently falling into the swollen Arroyo Simi on his way home from school.

In Oak View, a small landslide measuring a few feet occurred Wednesday as rains pummeled the county. But county Fire Department officials said Thursday the immediate threat seems to have subsided.

Spokesman Joe Luna said a team of experts observed the hillside early Thursday and concluded that there is no immediate danger. The slope first buckled last year during heavier rains.

In La Conchita, residents are poised to begin packing sandbags if rains hit their community again. So far emergency preparations have been planned, but not implemented.

“Hopefully it won’t rain,” Luna said.
