Chang Opens Against Lavalle, Then Martin Faces Hernandez
The United States begins defense of its Davis Cup title today against Mexico, sending out Michael Chang in the first singles match.
In Thursday’s draw at San Diego, Chang was selected to play Leonardo Lavalle. Todd Martin will play 18-year-old Alexandro Hernandez in the second match of the best-of-five series, which will be held at the La Costa Resort in Carlsbad.
The U.S. team of Patrick McEnroe and Patrick Galbraith will play Luis Herrera and Oscar Ortiz in Saturday’s doubles. Sunday’s singles matches will reverse today’s pairings.
