A Ventura County Sheriff’s Department helicopter Friday helped capture one of three youths who had escaped from a detention center near Santa Barbara earlier in the day, officials said.

The three juveniles were captured in thick brush along the Santa Ynez river just east of Lake Cachuma.

Officials at the Sheriff’s Department described the incidents this way:

At about 8 a.m., the suspects escaped from the Santa Barbara County Juvenile Detention facility near Los Prietos.

The California Highway Patrol set up a perimeter on the Santa Ynez River and solicited the help of forest rangers and the Sheriff’s Department helicopter.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., forest rangers apprehended two of the juveniles near the river.

The remaining youth was located by deputies in the helicopter half an hour later.

The youth attempted to escape through thick brush, but Ventura County deputies in the helicopter directed officers on the ground who captured him. He was flown back to a CHP command post and returned to the detention facility.
