West Virginia Puts Crimp in Boston College’s Hopes

Seldon Jefferson and Greg Simpson each scored 23 points Wednesday night at Newton, Mass., leading West Virginia, 11-13 overall and 6-10 in the Big East, to a 108-89 upset of No. 20 Boston College (16-7, 9-6), damaging the Eagles’ hopes of making it into the NCAA tournament.

No. 10 Wake Forest 68, Clemson 48--Steve Goolsby and Tony Rutland fueled a second-half run at Winston-Salem, N.C., that helped the Demon Deacons (18-4, 10-3) sink the Tigers (15-8, 5-8) in an Atlantic Coast Conference game and remain perfect at home with an 18-0 record.

No. 18 Iowa 83, Michigan State 47--Russ Millard scored 17 points and Jess Settles 16 at Iowa City in a Big Ten game, as the Hawkeyes (19-6, 8-5) beat the Spartans (14-12, 8-6) for their fourth consecutive victory.

Oklahoma State 58, No. 22 Iowa St. 46--The inside play of Jerome Lambert and Jason Skaer and a strong second-half defensive effort at Stillwater, Okla., gave the Cowboys (14-9, 4-7) the Big Eight victory, its third in its last four games. Iowa State (18-7, 7-4) has lost its last eight games at Stillwater.

No. 23 Georgia Tech 84, Virginia 75--Matt Harpring scored 22 of his career-high 30 points in the second half and Eddie Elisma added a career-best 22 points and 14 rebounds to spearhead the Yellow Jackets (17-10, 10-3) over the Cavaliers (11-13, 5-9) in an ACC game at Charlottesville, Va.

George Washington (17-5, 10-2 Atlantic 10) won for the ninth time in 10 games with an 84-72 victory over Duquesne (9-14, 3-10) at Washington. . . . Austin Croshere and Derrick Brown scored all but two of Providence’s 27 second-half points as the Friars (15-9, 8-8 Big East) survived a late rally by Notre Dame (8-15, 3-12) at South Bend, Ind., to beat the Irish, 73-72. . . . Katu Davis scored 10 of his 18 points during a 26-5 second-half run at Athens, Ga., that erased an 11-point deficit and sparked Georgia (15-8, 6-7 Southeastern Conference) to a 77-68 victory over Vanderbilt (16-10, 6-7). . . . College Basketball Notes

Three Cal players----guards Jelani Gardner and Prentice McGruder and forward Tremaine Fowlkes will miss today’s game against Washington for violating team rules.
