Frozen Produce May Share Billing With Fresh: Frozen fruits and vegetables might soon enjoy the same nutritional advertising criteria as fresh produce. The Food and Drug Administration said the frozen produce industry tested its products against raw fruits and vegetables and found they had roughly the same amounts of nutrients. The FDA proposed to let frozen produce--plain fruits and vegetables, not those covered with sauces or containing other ingredients--carry the term “healthy” on their packaging. If the proposal becomes law, it will make frozen produce equivalent to fresh fruits and vegetables in how nutritional benefits can be labeled. Until now, only raw produce was exempt from a requirement that a food must be tested and shown to provide at least 10% of the daily requirement of certain nutrients before it could be labeled “healthy.”
