UC Irvine’s Hoskinson, Durden Finish Third at Big West Meet

UC Irvine’s Jeff Hoskinson and David Durden each picked up third-place finishes on the second day of the Big West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at Belmont Plaza.

In the 400 individual medley, Hoskinson finished in 4 minutes 3.70 seconds. UC Santa Barbara’s Carl Larsen was first in 3:55.44. Durden took third in the 100 butterfly (50.08).

Former Irvine High star Jason Lezak of Santa Barbara took second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.90.

Santa Barbara, the 17-time men’s defending champion, leads with 525 points. UNLV is second with 506 and Pacific is third at 311. The Anteaters are in fifth with 246.

In the women’s competition, Irvine’s Gwen Yoshizumi finished third in the 100 backstroke (58.03) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (59.16).

Nevada, leading with 579 points, was led by Lise Mackie, who set a meet record in the 200 freestyle with a time 1:48.94.

Nevada Las Vegas is second (446) and Santa Barbara third (409).

The competition concludes today.

In nonconference gymnastics:

Cal State Fullerton 189.575, Seattle Pacific, 185.375--Heather Fritzsche won the vault and uneven bars as the Titans swept the meet. Cristi Clifford was first in the all-around with a score of 37.125.

In Big West Conference women’s softball:

Cal State Fullerton 3-6, UC Santa Barbara 1-2--Three consecutive singles and two doubles in the third inning gave Cal State Fullerton (8-2, 2-0) five runs to sweep the doubleheader.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Southern California College 7, Western New Mexico 0--SCC lost only eight games during the match.
