2 Teens Critically Hurt in Accidents
Two teenagers remained in critical condition Monday after they were hit in separate but similar accidents by two pickup trucks as they were crossing streets near their schools, police said.
The first accident occurred in Westminster about 7:30 a.m. when a 13-year-old boy was running across Newland Street to get to class at Warner Intermediate School, Sgt. Bill Lewis said.
The Costa Mesa teenager ran in front of a northbound truck and was hurled onto its hood, Lewis said. He suffered serious head injuries and was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange.
More than nine hours later, a 14-year-old student at Canyon High School in Anaheim was leaving school when she was hit by a pickup, Anaheim Police Sgt. Greg Mattis said.
The girl was walking with two friends across South Imperial Highway when the accident occurred at 4:45 p.m. She was airlifted to UCI Medical Center.
The teenagers’ names were not released because of their ages. Neither student was in a crosswalk, police said. No one was cited.
