City officials and community members are set to attend a brief ceremony Saturday marking the location of a new recreation building and police storefront in south Oxnard.

Oxnard Mayor Manuel Lopez and Bonnie Trent, president of the South Winds Neighborhood Council, are expected to turn out for the event scheduled at 11 a.m. at South Winds Park, 455 W. Clara St.

The new facility, expected to cost about $230,000, will accommodate cooking classes, dance classes, tutoring and many sports and other activities.

Stan Myers, Oxnard’s assistant police chief, said the city will close its current storefront facility in the South Winds neighborhood on Hueneme Road when the new building opens in December. Myers said the move will enable the department to move into a city-owned building--a private businessman donates the rent at the current location--and better serve the community.

“It will put the storefront in a building that is in close proximity to youth who are participating in recreation,” Myers said.

The city is expected to begin construction on the new 2,700-square-foot building in May.
