Crespi’s Matthews Steps to the Four

Barry Matthews had four hits and four runs batted in for Crespi High in a 20-5 victory over Westminster on Saturday in the second round of the El Segundo tournament.

Chris Crawley also had four hits. Brian Felten struck out eight and walked three in six innings, picking up the victory for the Celts (2-0). He allowed three earned runs.

In another El Segundo tournament game:

Royal 5, Peninsula 1--Brent Egan, Kevin Mellinger and Matt Pitstick each had two hits for the host Highlanders (2-0) in the second round. Mike Rainer pitched four shutout innings, allowing one hit.

In Westside tournament pool-play games:

Buena 9, Sylmar 8--The Bulldogs (2-0) scored the winning run in the eighth inning when the Spartans (1-1) committed a throwing error while trying to turn a double play. Javier Ruelas had four hits for Sylmar.

Channel Islands 22, Oxnard 0--Hector Lopez pitched a one-hitter, striking out 13 and allowing only one walk for Channel Islands (1-1).

Mookie Boyd had four hits, including a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored for the Raiders.

San Pedro 4, Notre Dame 3--Kevin Stromsborg hit a three-run home run for the host Knights (0-2), but San Pedro (2-0) scored the go-ahead run on an infield single in the top of the seventh.

Chatsworth 6, Camarillo 1--Andrew Silver (1-0) allowed one unearned run on three hits in seven innings, striking out five and walking two for the visiting Chancellors (2-0).

Frank Dipoma had two hits, including a double, for Chatsworth. Travis Winn added two hits and drove in one run, and Mike Wexler had two hits and scored twice for the Chancellors.

Hart 7, Taft 0--Three pitchers combined on a one-hitter for the host Indians (2-0). Jason Westemier (1-0) pitched five innings of no-hit ball, striking out eight and walking four before yielding to Brian Hernandez, who gave up the only Toreador hit in the sixth inning. Bob Graves pitched the final inning.

Rio Mesa 12, St. Monica 4--Tyronne Nunnery hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning and Albert Ambriz added three hits and an RBI to pace the host Spartans (1-1).

Newbury Park 5, Pasadena 3--Mike Amundson (1-0) struck out 10 and walked two, allowing two runs (one unearned) on two hits in five innings for the visiting Panthers in a Duarte tournament first-round game.

Justin Flame struck out five and walked one in two innings of relief. Jake Farrell had three hits for Newbury Park, including a double and a two-run home run, and Justin Vint added a two-run home run.

L.A. Baptist 18, Campbell Hall 4--Geoff Ramsa hit a grand slam for the host Knights (2-0) in a St. Anthony’s tournament game that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Ramsa and Seth Barkley, who hit a three-run home run, each had five RBIs.

Quartz Hill 5-12, Valencia 0-2--Host Quartz Hill (2-0) allowed just six hits in a nonleague double-header. Mark Madsen had eight strikeouts in four innings in the first game and allowed just one hit. In the second game, Travis Allen had two strikeouts and allowed no earned runs for his first high school victory.

Bryan Garcia had six hits and two RBIs.

Crescenta Valley 7-3, Antelope Valley 3-0--The visiting Falcons (2-0) staged a four-run rally in the ninth inning of the first game of a nonleague doubleheader after the Antelopes (1-2) scored three in the seventh to tie.

Nathan Barber scored the winning run on an Antelope Valley throwing error.

Westlake 4-3, Chaminade 0-4--A leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth by Jason Giovannettone gave host Chaminade (1-1) a victory in the second game of a nonleague doubleheader.

SOFTBALL

Oak Park 5, St. Monica 2--Kaylene Boldroff pitched a one-hitter, striking out 11 and walking two, to lead the Eagles in a Westside tournament pool-play game. Boldroff also had two RBIs. Oak Park (1-1) lost, 9-0, to West Torrance later Saturday.

Royal 4, La Reina 0--Kaelynn Jones allowed just two hits for host Royal (1-0) in a Simi Valley tournament game.
