LAWYER LOTTO: What is it about Hollywood celebrities that makes them pick the same lawyers? When former Woodland Hills resident Alec Baldwin goes to trial for allegedly smacking a photographer, he will be represented by the same lawyer who defended actor Jack Nicholson when he was accused of smashing a Mercedes with a golf club two years ago in Toluca Lake. . . . The prosecutor is the same, too--Assistant City Atty. Jeff Harkavay.

NEW MAN: People on campus say the Pierce College community is eagerly awaiting the arrival of new president Bing Inocencio, above. “We’re looking forward to working with a fresh person from outside the district who has fresh ideas,” said faculty leader Richard Follett. . . . Los Angeles Community College District trustee Gloria Romero called Inocencio “an intellectual who’s not afraid to get his hands dirty” (B1).

CABLE RAID: After 18 months of surveillance, sheriff’s deputies Thursday nabbed two North Hollywood men and confiscated between 3,000 and 5,000 bogus cable television converter boxes. The boxes, used to illegally gain access to all channels, sell for $150-$450. Lee Prentiss, security director for TeleCommunications Inc., called it “a major bust.” . . . One distraction: the 80-pound pit bull that ran out of one of the three locations and lunged at a deputy. Officers opened fire; the dog was wounded.
