By the People: In the midst of the busy awards season, the people had a chance to acknowledge their favorites at the 22nd annual People’s Choice Awards on Sunday night at Universal Studios. A representative sampling of the American public was polled by the Gallup Organization to determine the winners. Tom Hanks was named both favorite actor in a motion picture and favorite actor in a dramatic motion picture (those polled did not name a specific movie); Sandra Bullock was named favorite actress in a motion picture. “Apollo 13,” starring Hanks, was named the people’s favorite motion picture. In the television categories, Tim Allen was honored as favorite male performer and Candice Bergen as favorite female performer. “Seinfeld” won for favorite TV comedy series and “ER” for favorite dramatic series. “Caroline in the City” was chosen as favorite new television series and “Murder One” was the favorite new dramatic series. Michael Douglas received a special tribute for career achievement at the event hosted by Brett Butler and broadcast live on CBS.
