Fernando, Rijo Don’t Give Up Hits
Some noteworthy pitchers were on the mound Sunday, showing mostly positive results. Fernando Valenzuela threw four innings of no-hit ball for the San Diego Padres in a split-squad game against the San Francisco Giants at Peoria, Ariz. . . . Jose Rijo took a major step in his recovery from elbow surgery by pitching two perfect innings for Cincinnati against Kansas City at Plant City, Fla., in his first official spring appearance. . . . The Indians’ Jack McDowell, making his first start of the spring, pitched two scoreless innings against Detroit before falling victim to some foul Florida weather in Lakeland and giving up three runs in the third.
