More on Outerbridge Sale: A hotly contested auction of 36 photographs by Paul Outerbridge from the collection of the Laguna Art Museum has top billing in the March/April issue of Christie’s New York Auction News. Praising the artist’s “intensity of vision,” “technical prowess” and “superb design,” the publication hails the April 23 sale as a rare opportunity to view Outerbridge’s work, “akin to a museum retrospective.” Laguna museum officials claim they are selling the Outerbridges to buy artworks better suited to their collection, but the decision has been criticized as a move to unload a valuable art asset that is one of the institution’s few claims to fame. The auction house has estimated the value of the 36 photographs at about $500,000.
