Assemblywoman Returns Check From Prison Guards Union

Share

For Assemblywoman Diane Martinez of Monterey Park, raising funds to campaign for election has always been tough.

So when a surprise check for $25,000 from the state prison guards union arrived in her post office box a few days ago, the combative Democrat was elated. It would go a very long way toward paying her reelection campaign expenses. Seldom does a legislator receive such a big contribution from a single source, particularly from a donor who had never given in the past.

Stricken with second thoughts, suspicion and, finally, discomfort, she sought advice, including that of her father, Rep. Matthew Martinez (D-Alhambra). She decided to return the check.
