The Stanford players were asked Friday how they felt about UCLA’s loss to Princeton. They smiled at each other and you could see there was little sympathy for a tough loss by a conference rival.

“It’s a shame, man,” point guard Brevin Knight said with a smile that drew laughs from players and media. Then he turned serious.

“It’s just another thing you can all say about the Pac-10. The whole league will get labeled with that loss. That happens. It’s not like Princeton hasn’t given a lot of teams problems. Last night was their night.”

New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley, who led Princeton to the Final Four in 1965, exulted in his alma mater’s upset victory over UCLA.

Bradley, the most valuable player of the 1965 tournament despite a semifinal loss, credited the Princeton victory to Carril’s coaching and the importance of disciplined team play.

“The other team doesn’t know what to expect,” said Bradley, whose NBA career included two championships with the New York Knicks. “That’s what happened to UCLA.

“I was tremendously happy for Pete Carril, the university and the players. This game was a moment they will remember all their lives.”

It cost Georgia Tech guard Stephon Marbury $542.58 to play in this year’s postseason college basketball tournaments.

That’s the amount the NCAA ordered the freshman and his family to repay by March 7 as a condition for being eligible for the Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA tournaments, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The payment was for expenses Marbury and his father, Don, had incurred at an Atlanta hotel during a November 1994 recruiting visit. The problem was compounded when Marbury’s high school coach in New York sent Tech a check for the expenses after being contacted by Tech assistant coach Kevin Cantwell, school officials said.

“On their trip down here, they charged things to the room that we cannot pay for,” Homer Rice, Tech’s athletic director, said. “The ruling was that the high school coach’s involvement is a violation. We maintain that this had been an existing relationship [between Marbury and the coach] for many years.”

Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun said he was 99% certain backup guard Ricky Moore will not even dress for today’s game against Eastern Michigan.

The freshman re-injured his partially separated shoulder during Thursday’s victory over Colgate. Moore didn’t miss any games when he first injured the shoulder Feb. 6. But Connecticut also had eight days off, and Calhoun said Moore needs time to rehabilitate the shoulder.

“A win would allow Ricky to play another game,” Calhoun said.
