Truck Ban Needed on Highway 118

Share

* As an eight-year resident of Moorpark, I was foolishly mistaken to think that when the connector between highways 23 and 118 was completed several years ago that the 118 truck traffic would be forced to use the 101 and 23 freeways. In truth, the truck traffic has only gotten worse, causing traffic jams, smog and road decay not only in Moorpark but at several locations along the 118.

The figures you printed for the past six years are staggering: an average of slightly more than one accident per day and one death every other month. This is a carnage. The thought of widening the highway is noble, but insulting--2016? There is only one solution--ban the trucks from the 118.

There is absolutely no reason to continue to allow truck traffic on the 118. It is only marginally faster than the 101/23, and all they are doing is avoiding the scales on the Conejo Grade. I’ve actually seen trucks avoid Moorpark by taking Old Grimes Canyon Road when the word has gone out that a temporary scale has been set up on the west end of Moorpark.

The solution is simple, quick and easy--but not for the politicians.
