So long, SigAlerts:

No, the traffic didn’t drive traffic reporter Jill Angel out of L.A.

“I miss the intensity of L.A.,” admitted Angel, who left her job at KNX radio to take a job as a lieutenant with the California Highway Patrol in Sacramento.

Angel, who had been on leave from the CHP, said she decided to return to duty after her TV job was eliminated. She also had been a traffic/weather reporter on KCBS, Channel 2 until the “Action News A.M.” show was canceled.

“I’m still getting letters from listeners in L.A.,” Angel said. “I had no idea that my move would have any impact on anyone.” While Angel, 39, wouldn’t rule out future TV/radio possibilities, she said there isn’t much need for traffic reporters in her new city.

“On my first day here, I was supposed to be at work at 8 a.m. in downtown Sacramento,” she said. “It was raining, and I figured I’d better leave early. I got there at 7 a.m.

“In L.A.,” she added. “It would be a 45-minute drive. I made it in eight minutes.”

EX-TRAFFIC REPORTERS CLUB: When Angel decided to leave KNX radio, she called up her predecessor, Bill Keene, who is retired and living in Tucson. “I said, ‘You want it back?’ ” she related with a laugh. “He said he’s happy playing golf.”

Keene, she added, can pick up KNX on his radio in the early morning.

Rush hour.

APPLE RUDY: His city “is the music capital of the world,” New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani proclaimed Wednesday after the Big Apple was chosen over L.A. to host the 1997 Grammys. “This is the difference between a city that’s for real and a city (Los Angeles) that’s on tape,” His Honor added.

Besides being the home of the 1997 Grammys, New York has other distinctions, as Giuliani learned when he visited the David Letterman show a year ago. Letterman’s writers suggested these slogans:

* “New York: Home of the $6 Cup of Coffee.”

* “New York: We’ve Got Great Coyotes.”

And, our favorite:

* “New York: The Bus Fumes Are Free.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: If you still need a laugh after that put-down of Gotham City, Anna Rundle of Glendale found just the kitchen for you in a local newspaper.

THE ANTI-POLITICIAN SENTIMENT GROWS: Charles Chivetta Sr., an Arcadia Council candidate, sent along what appears to be an announcement of a meeting of Ross Perot types. Chivetta was surprised that the Fire Fighters Assn. had canceled the candidates before the voters had a chance to do so.

SOUNDS LIKE SIZEISM TO US: On her sample ballot, Lisa Magdaleno of Redondo Beach noticed a peculiar listing in the race for a seat on the Republican Party’s County Central Committee in the 53rd Assembly District. “Small business owner” is the description of two male candidates. But a female candidate is listed as a “small businesswoman.”
