Giambi Leads Cal State Fullerton in a 23-1 Rout of Hawaii Hilo

Jeremy Giambi had four hits and drove in eight runs as host Cal State Fullerton pummeled Hawaii Hilo, 23-1, in a nonconference baseball game Thursday.

Giambi hit a three-run home run in the first inning, doubled in a run in the second, singled in a run in the third, had a sacrifice fly in the fourth and a two-run single in the fifth before leaving the game.

Mike Lamb had two home runs and drove in three runs for Fullerton (24-2), which won its ninth in a row.

Brian Loyd had a double and a home run and drove in three runs and Mark Kotsay had a double, two singles and three RBIs for the Titans, the defending national champions. Steve Chatham had three hits and scored four runs.

Scott Hild (4-0) gave up three hits and no runs in six innings for the the victory. Brendan Sagara (5-1) gave up seven hits and seven runs in the first without getting an out to take the loss for Hawaii Hilo (8-21).

The teams play again at 7 tonight and Saturday.

In other nonconference baseball:

Concordia 17, Western Baptist 1--Chad Smith had a triple and a home run, six RBIs and four runs scored for host Concordia (12-11-1), which had 13 hits, eight walks and six hit batsmen. Sal Montez had three hits and four RBIs and Derrick Bly extended his hitting streak to 22 games.

In nonconference softball:

Whittier 6-4, Pacific Christian 5-6--Andrea Gochmanosky had three hits and three RBIs and Kristin Phillips had three hits, three runs, and two RBIs in the doubleheader split for Pacific Christian (6-14).

Southern California College 8, William Carey 2--Jen Caruso had three hits, three RBIs and a run scored for Southern California College (8-9-2). Teammate Sarah Waters added two hits and scored a run. SCC’s Jen Houston (3-4) struck out 13, giving up only two hits and walking four. In an earlier game, Southern California defeated a club team from Auburn, 9-3.
