When Is $65 Million Not Enough?

Share

Mike Tyson, one of several heavyweight boxing champions, thinks he’s way underpaid.

For fighting slightly more than two rounds in last Saturday night’s knockout of Frank Bruno, Tyson made $30 million.

Not enough.

For fighting three times in the last seven months after serving a three-year prison term for a rape conviction, Tyson has made $65 million.

Not enough.

“I don’t think I’m getting what I deserve,” said an apparently angry Tyson in a conference call Friday. “I want more than $30 million.

“I need money to feed my family. No one gives a . . . about me. I have a short life span. I don’t have any endorsements. No one is going to give me a handout because I’m a great champion. I don’t need anybody to give me anything. I make my money off my sweat. I’m not satisfied with $30 million. I need more money.”

Lashing out in all directions, Tyson was not specific about who was to blame for his situation. Nor would he specify a figure he would consider reasonable for his services.

“I’m very unhappy,” Tyson said. “I’m not being treated fairly. I’ve been . . . my whole career. I’ve been getting no justice and it’s just not fair. What I have done for boxing, what I have brought to the sport, I deserve more. No one is able to draw like I draw.

“I’ve been in prison three years illegally. No one loves me. But I didn’t whine before the [Bruno] fight and say they didn’t give me 35 or 40 or $45 million. I didn’t pull out of the fight complaining. But I’m complaining now because I’m entitled to complain.”
