Booing Gretzky Showed Support for Ducks

Share

It is quite apparent Mike Penner completely missed the point of the boos each time Gretzky touched the puck. Step into the Pond and each night you’ll see the 17,174 faithful who show up regardless of the team’s record. Although some of the loudest roars might come after a correct music trivia answer or identifying which of the bouncing pucks the Ducks logo is beneath, we do love our Ducks with a passion. For once the Pond came alive with vocal support of our team and you mock us? It was not a sorry night, but one to be proud of--Ducks fans backed their team vocally!

Dear Mr. Penner: You’re right--Gretzky is the greatest and he is the reason we’re hockey fans! But you’re wrong if you think Gretzky was booed because of dislike or jealousy. It had more to do with his remark about how the Kings are “handicapped” because they don’t have a nice arena like the Ducks. That’s a poor excuse for the quality (or lack of) of the Kings hockey in recent years. Why can’t he just admit that the Ducks have come a long way--they are playing great hockey.

I am keeping a scrapbook of memories for my soon-to-be-born son. After my wife and I attended the Mighty Ducks game last Sunday night I was eagerly waiting to see the story on my son’s “first” hockey game so that he could read about the great game “we” saw together. I was a bit disappointed. All my son will learn about the game is that Wayne Gretzky was jeered by the Ducks home crowd.
